Greener Compute Club
I run the "Greener Compute Club" (GCC) which aims to raise awareness of the impact computing has on climate change, to research our university's Carbon footprint due to its computing (and ICT) activities, and to support activities of individuals and MMU to reach net zero computing. We are currently writing a "self study kit" with RISE: if you would like to get involved please contact me on email, LinkedIn or Twitter (see below).
GCC has informal, fortnightly meetings in Dalton Building 3.25 at 5-6pm on 14 & 28 Oct, 11 & 25 Nov and 9 Dec 2024.
Internal to MMU we are developing a set of resources, some via MS Teams/Sharepoint Pages and some via RISE (to be published in Oct2024). If you are a student or staff member at MMU you can open MS Teams, select "Join or creat a team" and paste the code e1j1ol5 into the "Enter code" box, and then select Join (more details at Microsoft Support). If you require a direct link then please contact me.
We have a number of projects, email me to get involved or just to learn more:
- quantify and reduce the Carbon footprint of a research lab - we are now installing smart sockets (Oct2024)
- create a RISE "self study pack" - to be available Oct2024
- supported the creation of a Green Software Engineering community portal
- sustainable computing hackathon - June/July 2025: get involved in the planning
- MMU is now a member of the Green Software Foundation
- RISE project for students to develop a project to reduce their (or MMU's) carbon footprint due to IT
